The main entry point to the Serere Sanctuary (Bolivian Amazon) is the town of Rurrenabaque, which can be accessed by air or land from the city of La Paz. By air the trip takes approximately 50 minutes, around 18 hours by bus, and 12 hours by jeep.

From Rurrenabaque, Serere is accessed by boat down the Beni river in less than three hours.

Serere is located in the Bolivian Amazon in the northern cutting edge of the Madidi Mosaic. The closest town is Rurrenabaque, three hours by river. The closest communities are Nuevo Reyes, a Tacana community thirty minutes by river, and Rio Viejo, a Maropa community a three hour walk away.

There are two seasons in the region: the rainy season is from January to March and the dry season from April to December. However, the weather does not depend on dates and there may be days of sun during the rainy season and rain in the dry season.

The temperature is comfortable year round: 70 to 90°F, 20 to 32°C except for during June and July when the winds from the south come in from the Arctic and the temperature can drop to 45 to 50°F, 7 to 10°C. This wind is locally known as the "surazo".

As in any tropical region there is a risk of malaria although there have been no cases in Serere. The use of the mosquito nets provided for each bed reduces the risk of bites and catching diseases. We recommend that you wear long-sleeve shirts and trousers and the use of mosquito repellent.

You are likely too see 3 to 4 varieties of monkeys: spider, howler, capuchin, squirrel; and many species of birds. During the walks through the jungle you can see tapirs, wild boars, deer, badgers, sloths, armadillos, agouti and hopefully catch a glimpse of a jaguar or leopard.

There are many amphibians and reptiles around, such as anacondas and black caiman. There are hundreds of thousands of insects, many still unregistered, many varieties of bats, and an impressive variety of flora. Our four lakes provide you with beautiful scenery, and the opportunity to observe a wide variety of fish.

Serere offers different programs for varying lengths of time and in different eco systems. These can be determined according to your interests. We recommend that you stay for a minimum of 4 days and 3 nights in Serere to immerse yourself in the rainforest and enjoy the variety of the area.

The lodge and the surrounding areas are very safe. The trails and infrastructure are designed for your maximum comfort and safety, and the hints of caution you will be given should suffice for your complete well being.

All of our guides are from the local indigenous communities (Quechua, Tacana, Maropa, Moseten) and have grown up in the rainforest and received training. They have their ancestors’ knowledge of medicinal plants, hardwood trees, edible fruits and beliefs about the plants and animals.

Our policy is a maximum of 6 guests per guide.

Fishing is forbidden in all but one of the lakes where you can try your luck with piranhas. If you enjoy fishing then you can fish on the Beni river where there are fish as big as two meters long.

The best time of year is between April and December. Between January and April activities can be disrupted because of the rains, but it is still fascinating to be there.

Serere is a private protected area in which only Madidi Travel operates.

Serere contributes to expansion and conservation of the Madidi Mosaic. Serere offers very comfortable accommodation in the heart of the Madidi Mosaic with first rate cabins including private bathrooms surrounded by primary rainforest where you will not only be serenaded by birdsongs and different animal calls, but also be able to watch many of these animals from the comfort of your beds through the screening.

Serere has local guides trained to teach you all about life in the rainforest both from a local and scientific perspective.

Serere generates direct and indirect employment opportunities for indigenous men and women from the Tacana, Moseten, Maropa, and Quechua cultures. The knowledge they acquire in Serere is transferred to their communities.

The income earned by the eco lodge is reinvested in conservation, training of indigenous leaders, health, education, infrastructure and other needs.
